A Los Angeles poet with a Nietzschean belief in her superiority to ordinary mortals, Ingrid whistles through the novel like a scorching Santa Ana wind, even though much of what we know of her in the book comes only from the letters she writes her daughter from prison, where she is serving time for murder. In the rich, turbulent screen adaptation of the novel, Michelle Pfeiffer's Ingrid is an indelibly acute screen presence. She surveys the world with the imperious glare of a predatory bird accustomed to ruling every roost she's ever perched on, and her jaw line resembles the gleaming curve of a pearl-handled dagger. Kill or be killed, and everybody knows it. It hardly matters that in the movie Ingrid is an artist instead of a poet. What the film gets right is the emotional tug of war between Astrid, played with a slow-burning passion by Alison Lohman, a newcomer, and the possessive goddess of a mother she both worships and longs to escape.

The film takes the materials of human tragedy and dresses them in lovely costumes, Southern California locations and star power. Almost makes it look like fun. We suspect there could be another, parallel story of the same events, in which the characters look unhinged and desperate and brunet. The story is determined to be colorful and melodramatic, like a soap opera where the characters suffer in ways that look intriguing. When you are a teenage girl and your mother is jailed for murder and you are shipped to a series of foster homes, isn't it a little unlikely that each home would play like an entertaining episode of a miniseries? First you get a sexy foster mom who was "an alcoholic, a cokehead and dancing topless--and then I was saved by Jesus," although she still dresses like an off-duty stripper. Then you get an actress who lives in a sun-drenched beach house in Malibu and becomes her best friend.

If you both comfortable having different faiths, your relationship can still be rewarding and fulfilling. I don't really care if she's religious or not, unless she brings it up all the time or tries to convert me. Now that I am married, it has become more apparent that his previous comments about not minding if his wife has a career, were not entirely accurate. We just celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary We have 5 children and like so many I feel alone most days. Only you will know. As more and more people marry out of their faith, the subject of interfaith marriage will become more and more important. I feel as if my husband and I just live passed eachother. In the meantime, she will probably view you as being less than a Mormon man who is a faithful priesthood holder. This means no swearing, loud talking, or making offensive jokes.
